HOW TO CARE FOR BAMBOO FOR BUILDING

How do you care for the bamboo you’re using for building? Proper treatment and maintenance of bamboo can help prevent pests and decay, ensuring its suitability in construction. Here are some measures you can take:

i) Harvesting:

First of all, you should harvest Bamboo at the right age to ensure optimal strength and durability. Harvesting too early or too late can result in weaker and more susceptible bamboo.

ii) Drying:

After harvesting, bamboo should be properly dried to reduce moisture content. This can be done by air drying the bamboo in a well-ventilated area or using artificial drying methods. Proper drying helps prevent decay and reduces the risk of pest infestation.

iii) Preservation treatments:

Applying preservatives to bamboo can protect it from pests and decay. Commonly used preservatives include boron-based compounds, copper-based compounds, and natural oils. These treatments penetrate the bamboo’s fibers, making it resistant to insect attacks and fungal decay. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use appropriate personal protective equipment when applying preservatives.

iv) Proper storage:

If you do not immediately use bamboo after treatment, you should store it in a dry and well-ventilated area off the ground. That is one way to avoid moisture absorption and pest infestation. It is even better to store the materials under covering, protected from rain and direct sunlight.
